Companies large and small struggle with determining the right marketing campaign for their business and not only where they should start, but how to analyze and determine what happened with their previous marketing or sales campaign.
Start by determine your goals, cost and profit analysis. Marketing is all encompassing of sales, return on investment and must have a strategy associated incorporating sales into the equation and results pending the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) determined usually by the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) or other executives in the company.
Second, let the data drive the expectations, projections, risk assessments, etc. If you have run enough campaigns or sales tactics and have a fair record; the data is there. Let the data drive your campaigns. Your Marketing campaign should have a remarkably driven approach given analytics and data. If you establish the data channels and determine how to approach, receive, and channel data for your next phases you can drive month to month, year to year, even five to ten-year projections. So, if your company isn't currently collecting data, your upcoming campaign is the time to start.
Lastly, Once your decisions have been established based upon your research and analysis it is time to determine marketing communications, audience and tactics. Speak to your audience in your brand terminology. i.e. Chic-fil-a's "EAT MOR CHIKIN" resonates with it's audience, because of the established Cow Marketing campaign.

Let’s consider what it is we need to have as a basic construct of a successful marketing campaign given all check points.
1) Determine ROI (Return on Investment) and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for product or service and determine if the campaign is viable
2) Ensure Company Branding and Campaign(s) are Cohesive
3) Identify Goals of the Company, Product, and/or Services
4) Research: Your current market and potential market to maximize growth
a) One word, Analytics. Learn from previous campaigns to determine potential market and campaign delivery for tactics and content
i) i.e. Determine your Audience and how to break and deliver tactics and messaging
5) Once decisions of company branding, the campaign, goals and product/service are decided it is time to determine potential ROI, engagement percentages, AB testing if needed all based upon KPIs
